In its latest effort to ensure a dope-free Olympics, China has decided to inspect all inbound cargoes and parcels instead of conducting random checks, the customs administration said.
As part of their ramped up anti-drug efforts for the Beijing Olympics, customs houses throughout China handled 159 drug trafficking cases involving 517 kgs of drugs and 224 suspects from January one to June 19, the General Administration of Customs said.
China has recently revoked licences for three drug manufacturers and punished 125 other companies for making or selling performance boosting drugs.
It had already created an Anti-Doping Agency in November last.
The “Golden Crescent” on the borders of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran had replaced the “Gold Triangle” on the borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos, as the biggest inbound source of drugs to China, Administration Director Liu Guangping said.
Since the launch of a massive anti-drug campaign in April 2005 to fight sports doping, China has handled 898 drug trafficking cases involving 1,330 suspects, official Xinhua news agency said.
