May 5: World powerhouse China set themselves up for a grand double by reaching the final in both the men’s and women’s sections against Chinese Taipei in the team event of the Asian Table Tennis Championships here on Friday.
China defeated strong contenders South Korea 3-1 in the men’s semifinals here last night while Taipei prevailed over Japan 3-0.
In the women’s section, China blanked Korea 3-0 and Taipei ended Hong Kong’s dream run, stopping them 3-1 in the other semifinal.
In the men’s semifinal between China and Korea, promising Seung Yoo provided the lone spark for Korea as he packed off Liu Guo in double quick time. Seung Yoo prevailed 21-10, 21-5 over Liu Guo to make it 2-1 after Wang Ling and Ma Lin powered the winners to a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Wang Ling edged past Kim Taek Soo 21-19, 15-21, 21-19 in a hard-fought match while Lin beat Oh Sang Tuh 21-19, 22-20.
In the women’s section, China’s Yang Ying and Li Nam faced some tough time against Kim Moo Kyo and Lee Eun Sil before prevailing in three games.
Yang Ying won 21-17, 14-21, 21-13 while Li Nam edged past Lee 21-14, 15-21, 21-19.
