Seeking to allay fears that a ‘‘stronger and more developed China’’ could be a threat to other nations, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao today said such a worry was ‘‘completely misplaced’’ and vowed to adhere to Panchsheel principles in settling disputes and deepening ties with neighbours.
‘‘Some people are worried that a stronger and more developed China will pose a threat to other countries. Such a worry is completely misplaced,’’ Wen told the ministerial meeting of the 26 member Asian Cooperation Dialogue today.
‘‘China is still a developing country with per capita GDP slightly over $1,000, ranking well behind the 100th place in the world. We still have a long way to go before China is modernised. Even if we become stronger and more developed, we will not stand in the way of others, still less become a threat to others. China will never seek hegemony,’’ Wen said.
Promising a policy to ‘‘broaden and deepen’’ economic cooperation among Asian countries, he said China would strictly adhere to Panchsheel saying: ‘‘The five principles of co-existence and stepping up dialogue and consultation contribute to removing sticking points, increasing common understandings and arriving at proper settlement of the issues left over by history.’’
Wen said China has resolved land boundary issues with most of its neighbours. ‘‘We have reached agreements with some countries on the issue of having joint development in the South China Sea in accordance with the principle of shelving differences and going for joint development,’’ he said.
‘‘The Chinese government will unswervingly pursue its policy of building good neighbourly relations and partnerships with neighbours and make solid efforts to develop friendly relations with other Asian countries,’’ he said.
Wen said the Communist giant will continue to play a ‘‘constructive role in regional affairs’’ and referred to Beijing’s role during the Asian financial crisis, combating Sars epidemic and providing relief after the tsunami. —PTI
