Director Rob Marshall won the Director’s Guild film directing award on Saturday for his musical Chicago, making him the favourite for Oscar gold this month.

Marshall thanked the cast of the movie and the directors of Hollywood’s lost tradition of musicals including Robert Wise (West Side Story) and Vincente Minnelli (Gigi) and Broadway choreographer of the original Chicago, Bob Fosse. ‘‘I stand here due to them,’’ he said.

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) is usually a barometer leading to the Oscars. Since 1949, when the Directors Guild began picking a best director, only five of them have failed to pick up the Oscar for best director.

The DGA award makes Chicago — a satirical musical about murderous showgirls seeking success — the film to beat for the Oscars set to be awarded on March 23. Chicago is leading the pack with 13 nominations and enjoys the backing of the promotional machine of Miramax films. But it has competition in The Hours, The Lord of the Rings: the Two Towers, The Pianist and Gangs of New York. (Reuters)
