BANGKOK, SEPT 26: Mumbai’s underworld don Chhota Rajan, who was wounded in a shootout here earlier this month, plans to leave Thailand this week on a private plane, the Nation newspaper said today.

The Thai police has learnt that Chhota Rajan, alias Vijay Daman, has made plans to leave Thailand aboard a private plane but they will first make him testify in court on Thursday against four men who are the chief suspects in a gangland attempt on his life.

Rajan was wounded in the stomach and arms in a shootout on September 15 at the apartment of his associate, Rohit Verma, alias Michael D’Souza. Verma died in the assault, carried out by seven or eight pistol-wielding assassins, and his wife, Sikandi Hama, was wounded.

The Mumbai wing of Interpol has reportedly asked for Rajan’s extradition but the Indian Government has not officially made the request and Thailand has no legal grounds to keep him under arrest.

“We cannot contain him. He is free to go,” said Major General Chakthip Kulchorn Na Ayutthaya, Assistant Police Commissioner of Bangkok. “Although he is wanted in India, it will take several steps before we can arrest him for extradition, and he has not committed any crime here.”

Thailand and India have no extradition treaty.

Rajan is now undergoing medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Bangkok, guarded by the Thai police. Asked whether he wished to return to India, Rajan told the Nation over the weekend: “Of course, but I cannot say when.”
