NEW DELHI, July 8: A pace bowling academy on the lines of the MRF Pace Academy at Chennai is likely to come up soon in Delhi. “The bowling academy will be set up with the coordination of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited,” disclosed former India speedster Chetan Sharma, who joined the ONGC as a senior officer a couple of years ago.
The Academy will be supervised by Kapil Dev, former skipper of the Indian team, who will be solely responsible for the selection of the players. “We don’t need a foreign coach to give tips to the budding bowlers when we have the highest wicket taker in Test in India,”said Chetan. Children in the age group of 10 to 16 years will be selected for the academy.
“The plan is still in its infant stage. A couple of senior cricketers from the organisation (ONGC) approached Kapil paahji with the idea and he has agreed to help in principle,” Chetan said.
“It is a big project that will take time to gain roots,” informed the cricketer. The academy will also have latest infrastructure. “We are planning to have a bowling machine in the near future for the players.”
Chetan, who is involved in coaching cricket in a big way in East Delhi, has also formed a trust — Chetan Sports Foundation — to promote cricket. The foundation-stone of the trust was laid six months ago with Chetan himself as its chairman and Kapil Dev as patron. The CSF is currently running two cricket academies in Delhi, where more than 100 players in the age group of 8 to 18 hone their skill.
The CSF also provides free training to talented youngsters, who have humble background. It is also giving monthly stipend to two budding cricketers. “Seeing the enthusiasm, the trust adopted two players and provides them with Rs 1000 each per month,” said Chetan. There are six coaches who are imparting coaching to the players at the academy.
