MUMBAI, Sept 28: Chetan Baboor underlined his number one status in the country by winning the Mumbai Mayor Central Zone All-India Ranking Table Tennis tournament at the Andheri Sports Complex. He followed his inter-institutional and the all-India Khar Gymkhana triumphs by upstaging his Petroleum and Sports Contorl Board (PSCB) team-mate Arup Basak in a marathon struggle 16-21 21-19 21-14 14-21 12-21 lasting 70 minutes.

Fourth seed Montu Ghosh earlier claimed the women’s title defeating third seed NR Indu 18-21 23-21 18-21 21-13 21-15. The junior girls’ title went to Bengal’s Poulumi Ghatak who came back from a two game deficit to defeat statemate Kasturi Chakraborty (Railways) 17-21 8-21 21-17 21-13 21-13.

Bengal’s Subhajit Saha was too strong for the Siliguri boy Kaushik Dey Sarkar, scoring a 21-17 21-18 21-6 win. Sarkar never seemed to have a chance against the 15-year-old Saha, riding on the confidence of a quarter-final appearance in the Asian Junior’s behind him.
