The special investigation team (SIT) probing the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam today filed chargesheets against Telugu Desam Party MLA C. Krishna Yadav, ACP Gokul B. Patil and seven others in the city court.
The chargesheet is the second supplementary chargesheet to be filed under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). The other accused include senior inspector of the Mumbai crime branch Datta Dal and inspectors Vashist Andale and Prabhabkar Kakade. The nine were charged with conspiracy, aiding and abetting the organised crime syndicate among other offences.
The chargesheet follows investigations by SIT using scientific methods. The accused, C. Krishna Yadav, was subjected to lie detector test and P-300 Bra for finger printing tests which have yielded fruitful results, officials said.
Karnataka Chief Minister, however, took credit for busting the scam when the ‘‘entire country was unaware of it’’.
Krishna said the Karnataka police had done a good job. Addressing office bearers of the state unit Congress, he said: ‘‘We need not learn lessons from the BJP. It is on the request by Finance Minister Jaswant Singh that the state agreed to hand over the case to the CBI,’’ Krishna said.
Defending the government’s decision to refer the scam to the CBI after maintaining defiance for over two years, he said: ‘‘The time is ripe to give it to the CBI, hence we have decided to hand over the case.’’
He said the state would put all facts on the StampIT investigations in an affidavit before the Supreme Court on January 8.
