By virtue of their win in Tier II of the inaugural Premier Hockey League (PHL) in Hyderabad early this year, Chandigarh Dynamos have been promoted to Tier I this season. Chennai Veerans have been relegated to Tier II for having finished at the bottom of the table.
The second edition of PHL will be played in Chandigarh from January 6. Like the inaugural PHL, this time, too, the league will have two tiers and matches will be played over a duration of one month. Sher-e-Jalandhar, Maratha Warriors, Hyderabad Sultans, Bangalore High-Flyers and Chandigarh Dynamos will battle for supremacy in Tier I. The league will be played on round-robin format with all teams playing each other twice. The winner will be decided on the basis of total points accumulated during the league.
Though the tournament had it’s share of success, the organisers have not increased the monetary stakes. The winners’ purse in Tire I will continue to be Rs 20 lakhs, while the runners-up will take home Rs 15 lakhs.
