PUNE, Sept 29: Chain snatchers had a `bad day’ yesterday as two of them were caught and and handed over to the police by alert victims. Both the incidents were separated by an hour.
One was reported from the densely populated Guruwar Peth and the other from Gultekdi. The stolen gold chains were recovered immediately in both the incidents.
Two young sisters vending vegetables in Guruwar Peth apprehended a 22-year-old youth after he relieved them of a gold chain around 1 pm on Monday.
Deepa Pardeshi of Guruwar Peth and her sister Nirmala caught and handed over Subodh Kumar Vijay Prasad Patil from Ramnagar in Raypur district of Madhya Pradesh to the Khadak police.
Deepa was cooking at her house while Nirmala was vending vegetables outside when Subodh Kumar approached at their house posing as a salesman.
Deepa received Subodh Kumar who offered to polish gold and silver ornaments as well as brass utensils at a cheap rate.
When she turned down the offer, Subodh Kumar forced entry inside and started polishing a bronze medal which Deepa’s brother had won in a wrestling competition. When Deepa protested, he pushed her aside, snatched her gold chain and sprinted away.
Deepa and Nirmala started chasing him and cried for help. They nabbed him after a short chase. Neighbours also reached there and assisted them in recovering the stolen chain from Subodh Kumar.
Subodh Kumar was handed over to sub-inspector Nivrutti Lawande at Lohiyanagar police chowki. Deepa has lodged a first information report (FIR) with the Khadak police.
An hour after that incident, Phulabai Sundar Shetty (40) apprehended a young woman who had snatched her gold chain. The alleged chain snatcher, Anita Santosh More (22) from Jaybhavani Nagar slums near Parvati Paytha, was handed over to the Swargate police.
Phulabai, a resident of Gultekdi Industrial Estate, was passing by the Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth Colony when Anita stopped her, asking direction to an address around 2 pm.
While Phulabai was busy conversing with Anita, the young woman snatched her gold chain and took to her heels. Phulabai raised an alarm and started chasing Anita. Alerted by Phulabai’s cries for help, some passers-by also tailed Anita and intercepted her. Anita was handed over to the Swargate police after Phulabai’s chain was recovered from her.
