The government today promised to take up the issue of death sentence to Sarabjit Singh with Pakistan.Sarabjit’s family says he has been mistaken for RAW agent Manjeet Singh.Even as a delegation of Congress MPs and MLAs from Punjab claimed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had assured them that he would speak to Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, the PMO refused to comment.The Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Navtej Sarna said the Indian High Commission in Islamabad had sought consular access to Sarabjit Singh.Sarabjit Singh, who Pakistan claimed to be Manjeet Singh, was sentenced to death for alleged involvement in blasts in Lahore and Multan in 1990.Since then, Sarabjit’s family has been making efforts to secure his release. His sister Dalbir Kaur, accompanied by BJP MPs Navjot Sidhu and Avinash Rai Khanna, and Akali Dal MPs Ratan Singh Ajnar and S S Dhindsa, today met External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh, who said the case is now with Musharraf.Speaking to Express, Sidhu said the minister assured all possible help and legal aid to Sarabjit Singh. ‘‘The least the government can to is own him up and try to help him. The government is obligated to try, not to succeed,’’ he said.Pak MP to chip inNew Delhi: The issue will find an echo in Pakistan Parliament later this month. “I do not know the facts of the case. But I will take your voice to our Assembly which is meeting on August 29 and seek an answer from our government,” M P Bandara, member of the Pak National Assembly told reporters on the sidelines of the launch of Indo-Pak Parliamentary Forum.
