Indicating a hardening of stance against Left extremism, the Centre is likely to set up a ‘‘Unified Command’’ to coordinate anti-Naxalite operations across nine states.

Senior Home Ministry officials said the Centre has written to the states seeking their views and the issue is likely to dominate the CMs’ meeting beginning tomorrow.

It is learnt that some states have already indicated their willingness to be part of the joint exercise. One of the key reasons behind this drastic shift in the stand of the Union Home Ministry, sources say, is the breakdown in talks between the Andhra Pradesh government and the CPI (Maoists).

Senior Ministry officials said the composition of the Unified Command is yet to be worked out. The Chief Ministers are expected to give their suggestions on the composition of the Command and also the unified strategy to deal with Naxalites.
