NEW DELHI, FEB 1: Responding to the Gujarat government’s request to the Centre to rebuild at least 200 schools flattened in the recent earthquake, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry decided to provide it Rs 150 crore for reconstruction of educational institutions.

Of this, Rs 100 crore will be earmarked for elementary education and the rest will be channelised through the UGC for college and university education. This amount will be in addition to what is being provided to Gujarat for various educational programmes. A committee of central and state officials are being set up to implement the plan, Union HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi said while annoucing special education aid to the quake-devastated state.

For shelterless women and children, 200 creches and 50 short stay homes will also be set by the HRD Ministry. In addition, more than 500 Aganwadi centres will be opened under 24 additional Integrated Child Development Services projects in Gujarat. These are meant to benefit three lakh women and children at an annual cost of Rs 7 crore.
