Just three days ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls, the Union Urban Development Ministry today announced projects worth Rs 8,200 crore for areas in and around Mumbai under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
“These projects are important for the development of Mumbai, which happens to be largest metropolis of the country…so they have been given very high priority,” said Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy.
As many as 12 projects worth Rs 2,808 crore have been sanctioned to cover Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai areas. Besides these, three major projects have been approved by the ministry and formal procedures are pending.
“They will be given financial sanction in the next two to three weeks,” the minister said. They include Middle Vaitarna Water Supply Project (phase IV), stormwater drains and protection of Mithi River. They will cost about Rs 4,000 crore.
Subsequently, six more projects of water supply, sanitation and solid waste management, amounting to Rs 1,400 crore, will also be cleared.
The Central Government, Reddy said, would also fund Rs 4,000 crore for the Mumbai Metro rail project, which would cost about Rs 20,000 crore.
