Following a sudden spurt in violence in the North Cachar hills region of Assam, the Centre is sending a team of senior officials to make on the spot assessment of the situation in the disturbed area and review the security arrangements for the railway personnel, targeted by militants.

The team headed by Secretary (Border Management) in the Home Ministry, Shantanu Consul, will leave for Guhawati on Thursday and visit the affected areas where members of the Jewel Gorlosa faction of Dima Halam Daogah militant organisation have been attacking railway personnel and disrupting railway work, Home Ministry sources said. The North Cachar hills district is about 300 km south of Guwahati.

Repeated attacks led to the suspension of train services on the Lumding-Badarpur section for 10 days last month. Work resumed after the state Government made explicit assurances to make every effort to ensure the safety of railway personnel working on the section.

The Central team will review security arrangements along the railway track and also meet railway staff to assure full protection to them. It will also hold discussions with the state Government officials and security agencies operating in the field.
