The Cabinet Committee on Security on Saturday night approved vital defence purchases and also reviewed the country’s security scenario.

Sources said the meeting was mainly to approve the purchases and meet the deadline for placing orders this month. When asked if the AJT purchase figured, External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha said: ‘‘One way or the other, I am not in a position to respond.’’

The government has been negotiating with British Aerospace for the purchase of 66 AJTs for training IAF pilots.
