A project to build a prototype of the indigenously-built Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)’s naval version has been cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Thursday.
It is understood that the Aeronautical Development Agency along with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited will build a ‘‘technology demonstrator’’ like its predecessors.
Confirming that HAL was ready to start work, its chairman N.R. Mohanty told The Indian Express that they will also begin on a two-seater trainer version. ‘‘The airframe and design will remain the same but the undercarriage will have to be stronger,’’ he said. HAL will be joined in the endeavour by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
While the naval version will be a single-seater, the training version will be a two-seater and add to the operational capabilities of the LCA. After the success of the indigenously-developed Intermediate Jet Trainer he was confident the naval version would be ready soon.
Meanwhile, LCA designers will have the construction of the indigenous air defence ship which could be a possible home for the naval LCA. Defence Minister George Fernandes informed Parliament on Thursday that the Government has accorded approval for construction of the 37,500 ton Air Defence ship at Cochin Shipyard Ltd, Kochi. The conceptual and structural designs and the hydrodynamic model testing of the ship has been completed and Kochi Shipyard will enter into contracts with foreign agencies soon.
