Abdul Karim Telgi made an appearance in a Thane court today in connection with a 1999 fake revenue stamp case lodged by the district police. He was presented by a CBI team led by Deputy Superintendent S.P. Singh.

The CBI sought his custody to ascertain whether the Rs 88-lakh Thane fake stamp case, in which Telgi is one of the 10 accused, is part of the bigger conspiracy being probed by the agency.

The then investigating officer SI Pratap Kakade of Thane rural police had not arrested Telgi on the pretext that he was absconding. Kakade was later arrested by the SIT.

Government prosecutor Pradeep Gharat said the probe into this case had started from one Phulchand Jain who led them to others, including a postal employee, Bhau Jagdale, who allegedly sold fake revenue stamps from the counter. ‘‘It was revealed during investigation that Telgi owned the press where the fake stamps were printed. Now, we have to ascertain his involvement in the larger conspiracy,’’ he said.

The judge remanded Telgi to CBI custody till August 17.
