AHMEDABAD, Nov 26: Facing acute shortage of manpower, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is planning to expand its network in Gujarat given the sudden spurt in export and trade activities.

“CBI would like to have a bureau in Kandla or in Jamnagar as lot of export activities have increased in these areas since past few years,” CBI director Trinath Mishra told The Indian Express. He said that there was a spurt in the financial crimes in state, which requires a separate unit for detailed investigation.

He said CBI in Gujarat was facing a serious shortage of staff and the bureau would definitely increase its strength. At present, CBI at its Gandhinagar unit do not have adequate manpower to fulfill its present need and a lot of posts were lying vacant, which were to be filled forthwith, he added.

As per official sources, in Jamnagar and Kandla CBI had information about the activities of underworld mafia and their contacts with Delhi based politicians. Moreover, most of the economic crimes committed in Gujarat or related with the state were being handled by the Mumbai unit, which requires an immediate attention.

“But the department requires set of people having good service record and who are capable of doing a good job,” said Mishra.

About the initiatives taken to set up the network, he said that his visit to Gandhinagar on Thursday was primarily to take stock of the unit and work. But during the visit a lot of problems were found. He said that CBI want to select some state government personnel who were regularly dealing with cases in Gujarat. “But those are selected, the State Government are averse to spare them. This has caused a serious problem to do away with the shortage of staff.

Mishra said that as per DGP (Gujarat) C P Singh, the police staff in Gujarat work in Gujarati language, while work in CBI, specially the documentation part, is in English or Hindi which the staff members find difficult to perform. “Still I have requested the DGP to give me some hands,” he added.

About the areas of significance, Mishra said that CBI wanted to keep a check on the agencies who were circulating counterfeit Indian currency in the market. He said that being the bordering state, Gujarat is one of the major transit sections where from the fake notes are pushed in to several parts of the country.
