Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) chairman Amiyo Kumar Bora has been told by the Assam government to quit his post following a criminal case filed against him by the CBI.

Official sources here said the CBI had filed a criminal case against Bora for his alleged involvement in corruption while he was chairman of the Railway Recruitment Board, Guwahati, during 1997-98.

The CBI has filed a criminal case against him under Sections 420 and 511 of the IPC for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to deprive 46 candidates by preferring others through corrupt and unfair practices.

Bora, it may be recalled, had been removed from the post of RRB chairman in 1998 following allegations by a section of candidates, who had applied for the posts of junior account assistants in the Railways, that undeserving candidates were getting preference.

A senior member of the AGP, which was then in power, Bora was subsequently appointed a member of the APSC by the Mahanta regime. He was elevated to the APSC chairman’s post after the then chairman Tara Prasad Das had to quit over a raging controversy over selection of candidates for various posts in the Assam Civil Services. Das incidentally is currently an Independent member of the Assam Assembly.

CM Tarun Gogoi, meanwhile, has advised Bora to relieve himself of the office, and has instructed Chief Secretary P.K. Bora to initiate necessary steps for the same. The APSC chief, however, has termed the entire move as politically motivated. He said he was being targeted because of his political past, having been a senior member of the AGP.
