PUNE, Sept 2: The health department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has cautioned citizens regarding the use of gulal during the Ganesh immersion procession on Saturday.

A statement issued by PMC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anil Ravetkar said adequate steps have been taken to ensure that the gulal was not adulterated. Citizens should preferably not use gulal or at least only use it sparingly, Ravetkar cautioned.

Former corporator Ravindra Malwadkar has also urged State Health Minister Daulatrao Aher to call for a ban on the sale of adulterated gulal as the colour was often mixed with kerosene and glass pieces which prove fatal. Malwadkar has urged Ganesh mandal volunteers to use good quality gulal during the immersion procession.

Meanwhile Additional Municipal Commissioner Deepak Kapoor said nearly four spots (ghats) have been identified in the newly merged 38 villages for the Ganesh immersion procession. There are two modes of immersion here both at public and private wells. Lifeguards sporting bright orange shirts (for identification) have been deputed at some big ponds in these fringe areas for safety.
