Nalanda’s local hero and the villain of IIM-CAT question paper leak of November 2003, Ranjit Don, is now Ram Vilas Paswan’s candidate for Hilsa, Don’s home constituency.

Kumar Suman Singh alias Ranjit Don is lodged in the Beur Central jail and the CBI is investigating the scam that rocked the country more than a year ago. The CBI had arrested Don from Delhi on the day of the CAT exam when he was selling question papers. Don has a pharmaceutical company RADON (read Ranjit Don) in Mumbai.

Though Paswan was not available for comment, he has not been defensive about the series of history-sheeters who have joined his Lok Janshakti Party. ‘‘It is only after they joined that my party looked up. How else can I fight the criminals of the RJD?’’ Paswan has said.

In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Don had contested from Begusarai as an independent candidate and had polled around 70,000 votes. He hails from the backward Kurmi caste.

Don has been nurturing political ambitions and is believed to have funded some prominent leaders of Bihar. He used part of his money to buy popularity among the youth in his native Hilsa. Many villagers had praised the question paper racket as a service he was doing to the community—he helped many become doctors and engineers.
