Chief Minister Manohar Parikkar has refused to make an additional one-time grant of about Rs 6 crore to cash-strapped Goa University to tide over its financial crises demanding more accountability from the University.

The Chief Minister, is insisting, among other things, that the University agree to a probe into the financial mess it finds itself in. University authorities, however, blame the government nominees in the Senate were not regular in attending meetings holding up decision-making.

New Vice-Chancellor Dr P.S. Zacharias recently met Parrikar to discuss the release of funds for various projects. He told Parikkar that they needed a Rs 6 crore grant for immediate payment of salary arrears of employees, technological improvements and administrative expenses. This apart from the regular budgetary allocations.

Dr Zacharias said the University will ensure accountability. University officials, he said, had no agenda but academic excellence as their goal. But they need a reliable support system to achieve it, he said.
