November 15: Cash worth Rs 13,000 was stolen from the University of Mumbai’s Kalina campus on Friday night, when thieves broke into the Jawaharlal Nehru University Library and the Department of Psychology.

According to the police, the thieves broke a wooden window frame to gain entry into the library on the ground floor. However, when they found no cash or valuables there, they targetted the Department of Psychology in the vicinity.

Informed Dr Naresh Chandra, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university, “The thieves decamped with Rs 13,000 from the psychology department.” This is the third major robbery in the university in the last two years, he added.

"In August 1997, some unknown persons had robbed Rs 16,000 from the university sports pavilion at Marine Lines, and there were a series of break-ins in the university staff quarters at Kalina in 1996," informed Dr Chandra, adding that security has been beefed up in the campus since Friday.

However, some professors residing at Kalina stated that securityhad always been lax. “At present, the university does not even have a Chief Security Officer, and only a handful of security guards man the main entrance gate and the Examination House. We have not seen any guards at the library or other blocks in the campus,” claimed one. A senate member added that the university has also done little to evict slum dwellers who had encroached on the Kalina campus. The PVC assured that advertisements for the post of Chief Security Officer had already been issued. The Vakola police are investigating the case.
