The Court of Special CBI Judge Jagdeep Jain on Saturday extended the police remand of prime accused of the cash-at-judge’s-door scam, Ravinder Singh, till September 30.

Sources in the CBI said the police remand was extended after the special public prosecutor stated that certain new facts have surfaced, which Ravinder Singh had told CBI during his custodial interrogation. The prosecutor said that Ravinder Singh has disclosed names of his accomplices, who need to be verified in his presence.

On the other hand, counsel for Ravinder Singh strongly demanded that he should not be remanded in police custody anymore. He said Ravinder Singh has not been allowed to sleep properly for the past two days owing to strenuous custodial interrogation.

“The CBI is questioning piecemeal, which is not in tune with the judicial system. The CBI has also interrogated his wife and hotel staff. His condition is deteriorating day by day,” argued Advocate A S Chahal, counsel for Ravinder Singh.

Chahal added that the medicines prescribed to Ravinder Singh were not given to him in the custody. He also moved an application requesting the Special CBI Court to place it before the Registrar General of the Punjab and Haryana High Court so that he can inform the three-judge committee, which has been constituted to probe into the judge-bribery case, that Ravinder is in the CBI custody.

He averred that till Ravinder Singh is in CBI custody, it will not be possible for him to record his statements before the committee.

The Special CBI Court, however, told the defence counsel to directly place the application before the judge’s Committee. Later, the application was taken on record.

The Court has reduced the 48-hour medical examination to 24 hours to ensure that Ravinder Singh is checked regularly. Meanwhile, the judicial remand of Sanjeev Bansal and other co-accused has been extended by 14 days.

The judges’ committee, which will arrive on Sunday, will examine a few accused, witnesses and a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday. One of the two women judges, whose names figured in the case, will also be examined by the committee at 9 am on the same day.

Sanjeev Bansal and other accused will also be examined on Monday.
