The family courts here are mired in chaos, say advocates practising here. With only two out of four courts functioning in the past five months, cases are piling up. The situation has worsened following the transfer of judges K.M. Vin and L. Abhichandani in May as no one has been appointed in their places yet. Only two judges have been managing the court, admits Principal Judge V.S. Bhatt. On an average 1,000 applications are admitted each month but only a third of the cases are disposed off.

On some occasions the court admits over 100 applications in a day. Advocate M.R. Solanki at the family court, said: ‘‘The family court was meant to speed up decisions on marital disputes. This purpose is defeated.’’ Principal Judge Bhatt said: ‘‘We are trying our best. It will help if the High Court appoints more judges.’’
