Students of Carmel Convent School have made their school proud by winning several accolades at the DPS Model United Nations (MUN) held in New Delhi last week. Over five schools from the city including Vivek High School and St John’s School also participated in the conference. The girls of Carmel Convent lifted several awards, including the best delegate award, and commendation certificates at the MUN. Over 120 schools from across the country attended the meet. In a media conference held at the school premises on Friday, Punita Singh, the team’s coordinator said, “MUN works on the lines of the United Nations. Schools represent different countries and express their opinions on international issues. Our team represented Saudi Arabia and formed committees like the Security Council and the General Assembly among others.” The winning team also shared their experiences. “We addressed issues like money laundering and human trafficking. We mainly spoke about the problems Saudi Arabia is facing as we represented it. There were other interactive sessions too. The best part about MUN was the lack of personal prejudice in the opinions shared by other countries,” said Nazuk Kumar, a team member. “Since whatever we expressed was the opinion of the country, it left no space for individual subjectivity to creep in. Apart from this, MUN provided me a platform to know people from diverse cultures and their views about different issues. I am glad to have been part of the team as the exposure I got at MUN will surely help me later in life too,” shared Nida Doon, a student of Class XII. Abhivyakti Saxena, a student of Class IX was presented the best delegate award. “The entire concept of MUN is very unique as it involves a lot of hardwork and research about the country. It also boosted my confidence,” she said. Rhea Sharma, another participant from the school said, “MUN is a powerhouse of knowledge. I learnt so much about other countries, their problems and culture. Moreover, it gave us an insight into other’s point of view. I believe MUN is not about winning or losing; rather it is about expressing yourself.”
