Lara was patience personified and together with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (54) put on 129 runs for the fourth wicket forming the cornerstone of the Caribbean resistance. Lara had a reprieve on 71 when Yuvraj Singh at forward short leg dropped him off Anil Kumble.

Earlier, Chanderpaul tried to lift Kumble from outside the off-stump but succeeded only in spooning a catch to mid-on fielder Irfan Pathan. His innings lasted 113 balls and was studded with six fours.

The West Indies lost overnight batsmen Daren Ganga (26) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (1) for the addition of two runs in the first half-hour of play.
