Punjab’s political fight threatens to spill over to its neighbourhood with Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today alleging that Akali leader Parkash Singh Badal has stashed away his ‘‘money and incriminating documents’’ in a house in Haryana.
Amarinder said: ‘‘TV reports about raids alerted the Badals and within a few minutes, two vans carrying huge suitcases were seen moving out of their residence towards Haryana.’’ He was replying to a question on why the Vigilance had not been able to unearth any sensational evidence against the Badals.
While appealing to Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala to cooperate in his drive against corruption, Amarinder added he didn’t expect any help from Haryana as Chautala is Badal’s political ally. He claimed that the money and documents were kept at properties owned by the Badals in Gurgaon and Balasore.
Amarinder also sought to refute allegations of financial bunglings levelled by senior BJP and Akali leaders against him before the Finance Minister Jaswant Singh. Threatening to sue BJP leaders V.K. Malhotra and Madan Lal Khurana and SAD leader S.S. Dhindsa for ‘‘libellous remarks”, the Chief Minister has written to Jaswant in reply to the letter sent by the leaders.
In his letter, he has denied that he repaid bank loans of Rs 9 crore after he took over as the CM. ‘‘The last payment was made to any bank after our settlement was finalised was on March 29, 2001,’’ before he became the Chief Minister, he said. His companies have to repay only two loans.
Accusing BJP-Akali leaders of telling ‘‘half-truths’’, he said none of his companies has defaulted on payment of excise duty. He asked Jaswant to order a thorough probe into all the allegations levelled by BJP-Akali leaders.
