A rapidly growing cancer cells need lot of energy. These cells get that energy from the Glucose, which is available in the blood. Radioactive Glucose injected into the blood reaches the Cancer cells and can be seen with a very advanced technology named as Positron Emission Tomography or PET scan.

Ruby Hall clinic has acquired a PET CT scanning machine that gives cancer diagnosis, says Dr Sameer Sonar, chief of Molecular Imaging (PET CT) and a fellow of the Harvard Medical School, USA. Gemini – Time of Flight: 16 slice PET CT scanner by Philips, is country’s first installation of this state-of-the-art technology at Ruby Hall Clinic.

Location of the cancer cells (in bones, nodes, liver and lungs) is found with simultaneous PET and a CT scan done by a dedicated PET-CT scanning machine. The machine does both functions in one go. This technique has revolutionised the cancer diagnosis and treatment across the world in the last five to six years says Sonar.

It combines, accuracy and fast scanning. It finishes head to toe scanning in less than 15 minutes. Since radioactive substances used in this technology expose a patient to radiation, the Gemini TF at Ruby Hall can reduce this radiation exposure to half as compared to the all other PET scanners all over the country.

The evaluation of cancer by this technique can be useful for detection of any living cells after a heart attack (so that an angioplasty or bypass can be done), searching for epilepsy focus in certain patients can also be done by a PET scan. In certain cases, source of infection can be found out by a whole body PET-CT scan. The impact of this technology is so much that, it alters the plan of treatment in 40 per cent of the cancer cases.

Ruby Hall Clinic also proposes a project –150-bed multi-speciality hospital at Wanowrie on the occasion of 89th birthday of Dr KB Grant, the founder of Ruby Hall.
