Hardening his party’s stand over the transfer of forest land to the Amarnath shrine board, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has demanded that the land allotment be cancelled. The PDP is a partner of the Congress-led coalition in the state.

In a statement here on Saturday, Mufti said the controversy over the diversion of the land had led to unprecedented and dangerous polarisation in Kashmir over a matter of faith, and drawn a pilgrimage conducted historically by the people of Kashmir and the state Government with distinction and care into controversy.

“It would be dangerous to allow the situation to drift any further. As a minimum required action, the state Government should forthwith cancel the order,” Mufti said.

He urged the Government to review the situation with an open mind and devise a new strategy “in an atmosphere free from fear, apprehension and suspicion to ensure a smooth and comfortable yatra every year”.

“We also need to relook the desirability of having a separate board for the Amarnath Yatra, which has generated controversies more than amenities for the yatris,” the former chief minister said.

According to him, the whole idea was wrong, given that most of the facilities to the pilgrims are still provided by the state Government. “It is ridiculous to measure the (yatra) in commercial terms, as has of late been projected. The yatra is too holy to be connected to any material gains.”
