Brazilian footballer Jose Ramirez Barreto, whose passport was seized for trying to fly out of India with excess foreign exchange, has been allowed to return home for six weeks by the Calcutta High Court.
Justice Asim Kumar Roy directed Barreto to furnish a bank guarantee of Rs 15 lakh and a bond of Rs 10,000 as condition for returning his passport.
Directing the ace striker to return to India within six weeks of getting back his passport, Justice Roy asked him to re-deposit the passport with the magistrate within two days of his return.
Barreto, arrested on March 20 for carrying US dollars in excess of that allowed to a foreigner, was on April 7 allowed by the trial court to travel abroad with the stipulation that he must appear before the court on May 25.
But the Brazilian striker could not leave as the Customs authorities, instead of giving back his passport chose to file a revision application in a higher court.
Barreto was arrested under the Customs Act for carrying 20,500 US dollars at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport before he was to board a Dubai-bound flight en route to Brazil.
