The government plans to impose stricter punishment for those seeking to determine the sex of their unborn child and the diagnostic centres helping them.

The Cabinet today approved amendments to the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1994.

The amendments seek to empower the state authorities to search, seize and seal the equipment and records at diagnostic centres conducting pre-natal sex-determination tests.

The use of ultrasound machines and techniques of pre-conception sex selection such as separation of sperms carrying XX and XY chromosomes will be brought under purview of the PNDT Act.

An increase in fine from Rs 50,000 to Rs one lakh and suspension or cancellation of licences of the diagnostic centres and doctors has been sought.
