The Union Cabinet today gave its in-principle nod for India to join the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) natural gas pipeline. The Indian Express had first reported that the proposal had been sent to the Cabinet by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The Cabinet has now authorised the Ministry to hold discussions with all concerned parties and finalise the amendments to the inter-governmental agreement and framework agreement for the pipeline. The TAP project offers India the possibility of an alternative of source of gas supply to India.
The Cabinet approved the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Bill, 2006, which will provide the SSB with their own Act like other border security forces.
The Banking Companies (Acquisition and Transfer of Undertakings) and Financial Institutions Laws (amendment) Bill, 2005, was also given a nod. The Amendment Bill seeks to enhance the flexibility of the boards of directors and bring nationalised banks’ operations in tune with modern business practices.
I&B and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi said, ‘‘The Bill is likely to be introduced in the current session of the Parliament.’’
