To avoid a revolt in the party, the United Democratic Party (UDP) president and Chief Minister Donkupar Roy said ministers from the UDP and the NCP in the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) coalition government will have to make way for other party colleagues after two and half years.

“To accommodate the interest and aspirations of senior party legislators, the present ministers will have to step down and make way for the others to step in as ministers,” Roy told reporters after the UDP central executive committee meeting on Friday.

Meghalaya’s Cabinet had been pared down to only twelve ministers after a recent downsizing. In the five-party-and-Independents coalition government, many senior party legislators of the UDP and NCP have been left out from the cabinet. There has been reports of discontent within the UDP over this.

The NCP and UDP have three members each in the cabinet. The other six berths are shared by the Hills State People Democratic Party (HSPDP), Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM), BJP and two independents.

Roy said ministers belonging to its coalition partners like HSPDP, BJP and Independents will remain the same.

Incidentally, Roy will also have to make way for NCP general secretary P A Sangma after two and half years. When the NCP-UDP coalition was formed, the two parties agreed that the CM post will be shared between them for two and half years each.

The UDP has also constituted a state election committee consisting of all eleven legislators and top leaders headed by Roy to prepare the party for the Lok Sabha and district council elections.
