Premier League managers are hoping to put a dent in their clubs’ balance books next week when the January transfer window opens the chance to bring in new players.
Chelsea
What they want: No big guns, just a few foot soldiers
Problem: Coach Mourinho has complained about having just ‘‘16 fit players at his disposal’’. The 200-million-pound buying spree that began last year is at the back of their minds
Solution: What’s 200m for Roman Abramovich
Arsenal
What they want: A defender, a foward and an extra goal-keeper
Problem: With defender Emmanuel Eboue already signed they now want the other two. Trying to woo Manchester City’s Shaun Wright-Phillips upfront and Norwich keeper Robert Green
Solution: Selling Edu will mean cash to sign Wright and Green. Since clubs lke Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid showing interest in Edu things can be easy
Manchester United
What they want: Ball-winning midfielder and an extra keeper
Problem: Empty coffers after paying 27 million pounds for Wayne Rooney.
Solution: Sell, maybe Giggs, maybe Kleberson or Djemba-Djemba, to fund new purchases
Liverpool
What they want: A striker after losing Michael Owen to Real Madrid and a replacement for injured Djibril Cisse, out for rest of the season.
Problem: Real Madrid’s Fernando Morientes is repeatedly linked with the club but his former loan club Monaco are also interested.
Solution: New boss Rafael Benitez has already signed Spanish midfielders Luis Garcia, Xabi Alonso and Antonio Nunez.
