NAGPUR, Aug 17: Maharashtra Government would soon provide bulletproof jackets to policemen and increase the number of armed police constables in outposts in Naxal-infested areas, Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde said today.

After laying the foundation stone for an expansion project at Khaperkheda Thermal Power Station, about 20 km from here, Munde told mediapersons that there was an increase in Naxal activity during last three to four months.

He said Naxals have become active not only in the State but also in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. Government was also considering acquiring latest foreign technology to overcome landmine blast problem in Naxal-infested areas.

Munde said Rs two crore was being spent on compound fencing for all police outposts in Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Bhandara and Nanded districts, where Naxals were more active.

Union Home Minister Indrajit Gupta had convened an inter-State meeting to coordinate anti-Naxalite operations, he said adding that now Chief Ministers, Ministers of Home and Director Generals of Police were coordinating the operations.

All the four States had undertaken a joint action against Naxals, Munde said. The number of police personnel in Nagpur, Amravati and other places would be raised and officers of the level of police commissioners would be shifted from their present postings within one week.As part of this move, officers of the level of inspectors have already been shifted, he said.

Nagpur Commissioner of Police T Singaravel would also be transferred as a matter of routine since he has completed his tenure here, Munde added.

The Additional DGP R H Mendonca, has been entrusted with the duty of probing the Nagpur police firing and the reported “naked parading of a Dalit woman” in Karanja Ghadge, Wardha district.Expressing concern over the paucity of rains in the State, he said water level in Marathwada lakes had depleted.

Divisional commissioners of affected divisions had been asked to submit reports right up to taluka level about water scarcity.

Dy CM favours industry status for filmdom

Munde has said that film-making should be treated as an industry under the law and provided finance from banks and other public sector institutions. At the opening of Dhantoli Police Station, Nagpur, he told mediapersons that this was the only way to free the film industry from the trap of black-money and extortion. About the recent murder of cassette king and film producer Gulshan Kumar, Munde said the police had arrested one person and idenitified two others involved in the dastardly crime. The Mumbai Police had saved the lives of two other film producers targeted by the underworld, he pointed out.
