PUNE, Jan 25: The presence of an army bulldozer on the Sopanbaug bridge today sparked tension as a huge crowd of civilians gathered there possibly apprehending a demolition of the bridge which remains their mainconnecting link to Race Course.

Noted gyneacologist Banoo Coyaji told The Indian Express that she had received a call from a resident that the army was out to demolish the bridge this afternoon. “I enquired with the Sub Area headquarters and they have assured me that they had no plans to demolish the bridge but were only working towards erecting a speedbreaker. But the civilians are certainly very upset with the army authorities.”

She said: “The last time they said this, they had demolished the culvert at Bhairoba Nalla.”

The Sub Area officials, however, maintained that this was not true. The officials stated that the headquarters had cleared up the area of the Race Course and had decided to erect a speedbreaker on the bridge to slowdown speeding vehicles. However, the crowd got wild and believed that the army was out to demolish the bridge, one of the officials said, revealing that the digging up of a certain portion on the bridge may have led to the misunderstanding. However, the personnel have already been sent tocover up these portions, he said.
