Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya has come under fire from a minister of his own government for the arrest of Avtar Singh, the husband of CPI(M) legislator Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, in a sex racket. While the Chief Minister all this while has been insisting that the ‘‘law would take its own course’’ though Singh is the husband of a party MLA, his Cabinet colleague, Subhas Chakraborty, has shot off his mouth, alleging police ‘‘excesses’’ in the case.Chakraborty, also the State Transport Minister, today told reporters at Writers’ Buildings: ‘‘The police are overdoing it. If some miscreants hide in your house and the police misses them but pick up your entire family, what are they doing, if not overdoing their bit?’’ Earlier during the day, the Chief Minister had asked reporters to clarify with Chakraborty himself what he meant by ‘‘police excesses’’.Chakraborty had yesterday charged the police with ‘‘excesses’’ during the raid, saying ‘‘in a hotel, people go for a drink and enjoyment, not for drinking gangajal.’’ When asked to comment on Chakraborty’s allegations, a visibly angry Bhattacharya today told reporters contact the Transport Minister for an explanation. ‘‘You should go and ask him, and not me, what he meant by ‘police excesses’,’’ Bhattacharya said.
