AMBALA, June 12: The Bahujan Samaj Party will boycott the civic receptions accorded to Uttar Pradesh Governor Suraj Bhan if he continues to "meddle" with the politics in the Ambala Reserved Lok Sabha Constituency during his visits, said Ashok Kumar, state party spokesman.

BSP sought intervention of President K. R. Narayanan through a memorandum urging that the Governor remain a non-partyman as long as he holds his post, said Kumar.

Kumar, while criticising the BJP, pointed out that on one hand the BJP-led coalition Government was pressing the citizens to donate liberally to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund to meet the challenge of economic santions imposed after the nuclear tests, and on the other hand, Bhan was wasting precious government money on his visits, travelling in helicopters just to meet his relatives. He said that Bhan has visited his constituency thrice within a period of one month after assuming charge.

The BSP spokesman questioned Bhan’s use of a helicopter to go to his native village Mehlanwali, his in-laws at village Mandi (Yamunanagar) and maternal village Bihta, all of which were well connected by road. He said that Bhan was wasting the public exchequer’s funds which had invited criticism from every quarter of the society.

Ashok Kumar alleged that Bhan was not maintaining the dignity of the post of Governor who had to abide by the constitutional obligations as an ideal citizen. On the contrary, he was engaged in campaigning and canvassing in his constituency foreseeing early mid-term polls in view of the continuing differences amongst the partnersof the BJP-led coalition, it was alleged.
