BHUJ, SEPT 1: Thirty-three Pakistani fishermen found in Indian waters were detained by the Border Security Force (BSF) which has stepped up vigil and tightened patrolling in the creek area forming the international maritime border between the two countries in the Kutch sector.
The Pakistani fishermen in three boats equipped with Chinese fishing engines were fishing in nulla number four of the Fabevari creek, 15 to 20 km inside Indian territory from the international border on Tuesday. The intruders included three teenagers from Thatha district of Sind province in Pakistan.A prior report from the G branch intelligence wing of the BSF helped nab the intruders.
In the preliminary interrogation by the BSF authorities, the Pakistani fishermen had said they ventured into the Indian side of the creek area as it is very rich in fish. They said this was the first time they had crossed into the border. They had come from Shah Bander in Pakistan, which is reported to have a base for all three wings of the defence forces these days.
While the boats seized from the fishermen are being handed over to Customs, the Pakistani fishermen are being shifted to the joint interrogation centre here. Sources said nothing incriminating was found from them.
This happens to be the third incident in the last three months. Earlier in June and July, nine boats with Pakistani fishermen had been seized from the creek area.
With the fishing season having set in from this month, sources expect many more intrusions by Pakistani fishermen next month. The fishing season, which lasts till March, draws hundreds of fishermen from the far off Saurashtra and south Gujarat coast to Jakhau on the western-most tip of Kutch which is rich in fish.
