The National Academy of Customs, Excise & Narcotics (NACEN), Faridabad, celebrated the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking (June 26) in a different style. The academy launched an initiative to educate enforcement agencies in the implementation and scope of drug laws through brochures entitled ‘Drug Information Sheets’.

S.K. Mishra, Member (Anti-Smuggling), Central Board of Excise & Customs, released the sheets on Friday. ‘‘It is important that the knowledge about the laws percolates to the ground level and this is precisely what the Drug Information Sheets will do,’’ he said.

NACEN director-general Praveen Talha pointed out that nearly 30 per cent of the global opium output is produced in India. ‘‘This is a dangerous indicator and points to poor awareness and implementation at subordinate levels.
