With the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on a hiring spree to recruit 10,000 personnel over the next three years to sustain India’s infrastructure drive in border areas, the Defence Ministry is looking at up scaling the engineer’s cadre to attract talent. On the cards for BRO’s General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) personnel are faster promotions, better pay packages and most importantly ‘respect’ from their army colleagues.

Chairing a review meeting of the organisation on Tuesday, the Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju said career prospects of civilian engineers cadre need improvement. “Efforts shall be made to bring a cadre review wherever required. The cadre should be brought at par with CPWD (Central Power Works Department) and similar organisations,” the Minister, who is in charge of BRO activities, said.
