The British government will urge companies to be flexible with workers during the soccer World Cup so that England fans can enjoy their team’s progress during the tournament, newspapers reported on Sunday. Because the World Cup is being held in Japan and South Korea, soccer-mad Britons will have to get up early for the England clashes, due to be held between around 7 a.m. and noon local time. Trade Secretary Patricia Hewitt has called on bosses to allow flexible working hours to accommodate the matches. “The last thing we want is the entire workforce taking an unannounced sickie on the day,” she is quoted by the Sunday Mirror as saying. A survey showed that one in 10 workers had said they intended to call in sick in order to see the crunch match between England and Argentina on June 7.

Beck Sr hopeful son will be fit in time

England captain David Beckham is confident of being fit for the World Cup finals. Beckham’s father Ted has been widely quoted as saying that his son could even be fit to play in the Champions League final on May 15 if United beat Bayer Leverkusen. Beckham broke the second metatarsal bone in his foot at the beginning of the month and has been told he will need six to eight weeks to make a full recovery. “Everything is moving in the right direction,” Ted Beckham was quoted in The Mail on Sunday. “

Japan 99 per cent fit, says coach Troussier

Japan coach Philippe Troussier says the co-hosts are “99 per cent” ready for the World Cup, despite lingering fitness concerns over key players. The Asian champions will be without first-choice goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi, Ryuzo Morioka and Hiroshi Nanami when they face Slovakia in Tokyo on Monday. But Troussier insisted that the work ethic of his players would be enough to see Japan extend a five-match unbeaten run that stretches back to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Senegal in October.
