British men leave something to be desired when it comes to the art of dating, says US actress Gwyneth Paltrow as she gets ready to get down with another woman in her next movie.

Paltrow told Now magazine that on her last visit to London, where she debuted in May on the West End stage in Proof, she was asked out only twice, and accepted both times.

‘‘British people don’t seem to ask each other out on dates,’’ the 29-year-old LA native said.

‘‘If someone asks you out, they’re really going out on a limb, whereas in America it happens all the time,’’ she added. ‘‘Someone will come up to you and ask you for dinner and you’ll say ‘sure’. It’s no big deal and no weight should be attached to it. It’s only dinner, for god’s sake.’’

‘‘Yet in Britain, mostly what happens seems to be that people meet at work. If there’s a little something there, then they hang out together and all of a sudden they’re boyfriend and girlfriend.’’

Asked about becoming a sex symbol for lesbians, she replied: ‘‘I love the thought. Why not?’’
