US Administrator Paul Bremer discussed details of a proposed transitional Iraqi governing council on Thursday with the country’s leading political groups.

One of the seven groups involved in the talks, the Iraqi National Congress (INC), said the long-awaited ‘‘governing council’’ would be announced soon to fill a power vacuum caused by the fall of Saddam Hussein on April 9.

The group of seven is made up of exiled groups who returned to Baghdad after the fall of Saddam on April 9. Other than the INC it includes the Shi’ite Muslim Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) and Al-Da’awa Party as well as the two main Kurdish parties.

They are expected to form the backbone of the council that would have some executive power. The groups have demanded a swift handover of power to a full-fledged Iraqi government. (Reuters)
