CALCUTTA, July 13: The Calcutta High Court today directed the Bengal Rowing Club here to pay a compensation of Rs 12.5 lakh to the family of Subhrajyoti Sengupta who was killed by a splinter of a mortar fire during a pyrotechnic show organised by the Army at the club premises.Of the amount, Rs 4 lakh would have to be paid to the mother and the rest to the wife and children of Sengupta, a division bench ruled. Club officials, present at the court, agreed to pay the sum by Monday next.The bench, comprising Justice Bhagabati Prasad Banerjee and Justice Ronojit Kumar Mitra, also approved the compensation package, offered by the Army to Sengupta's family. The package include a promise to employ Sengupta's wife as a teacher of an Army school and extension of education to his children up to class 11. Taking note of the gestures of the Army and the club, the judges directed the police to discontinue the proceedings against the club. The show was organised by the Army, Eastern Command during a championship onApril 19 last. Sengupta, who had gone to the club for the show, suffered an injury and subsequently died.
