MUMBAI, JAN 21: Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) registered their sixth victory from seven games when they got the better of Maharashtra State Police with a goal in each half in the Bombay Hockey Association Super hockey league encounter at the Mahindra Stadium on Friday.

BPCL now head the league table with 18 points. Their winning streak was checked by Western Railway who had held them to a 2-2 draw in their sixth outing.

BPCL had the lion’s share of the exchanges, especially after they took the lead in the 23rd minute. Until then, MSP matched them move for move and even had chances to score. But MSP forward Azmat Shaikh missed several gilt-edged openings that came his way.

BPCL broke the back of the MSP fight when Olympian Sabu Varkey prised the MSP defence with one of his characteristic solo runs and laid the ball on a platter with a goalmouth cross for Ravi Nayakar to score from handshaking distance (1-0).

The match was as good as over when BPCL struck again in the 45th minute through a stroke. MK Prakash converted the award with a push to the roof at the right of MSP goalkeeper Prakash Nyanirgune.

Machine Prototype Factory defeated Indian Airlines 4-2 after the two were level 2-2 at halftime in a Second Division League.

Shivshankar, L Maran (2) and Samer Jadhav scored for MPF. S Joshi netted both goals for Airlines.

Lokhande to lead
Manoj Lokhande of Indian Navy will lead Mumbai in the Sardar Jagtar Singh All-India Junior hockey tournament to be held at Ludhiana from January 25 to February 1.
