SYDNEY, November 27: Having battled foreign spies and dastardly organisations for decades, James Bond has come up against a modern new villain — the dangerous power-mad media mogul.

But Bond, portrayed by actor Pierce Brosnan, said on Thursday the scenario did not have a political message.

In Sydney, promoting his second Bond role in Tomorrow never dies, due for national release on December 26, Brosnan said the story was very timely.“We don’t have Russians, we don’t have Chinese but we have got this media baron played by Jonathan Bryce,” he said.

He could be a (Rupert) Murdoch, he could be a Ted Turner, a (Silvio) Berlusconi, whoever you want to pick out of the hat.

“Those fellows that are movers and shakers and have the wherewithal to manipulate and make lots of money in our society,” he said.

With a flagship newspaper titled Tomorrow with a global daily circulation of 100 million and satellite systems able to access every TV set on earth, the movie’s villain mogul prefers to profit from creating the news rather than reporting it.

“Could something like this transpire with any of those gentlemen I just mentioned? Yeah it’s very possible,” Brosnan said.

Turn up their characters 10 degrees and you could have something like Jonathan Pryce, “maybe just one degree”.

After the huge success of his first Agent 007 movie, Golden Eye, Brosnan felt more comfortable this time around with the role he is contracted to play twice more, with an option for a fifth movie.

Starring alongside Brosnan is leading Hong Kong-based action cinema star Michelle Yeoh, whom he describes as spectacular in the role of the mysterious Wai Lin, who becomes a formidable Bond ally.

Brosnan admitted his role was physically demanding, particularly as he tried to do as much stunt work as he could, but he did not find the underwater scenes much fun.

Trying to act underwater is pretty stupid especially if you suffer from claustrophobia.

Especially if you are trying to do James Bond and be cool and be brave, and you have an anxiety attack at 30 feet, and “you have to take your mask off and your scuba gear off and kiss the girl”.

But overall Brosnan said he loved playing Bond, a role which had been great for his career.

Referring to the current legal battle over the possibility of another James Bond being produced by another studio, Brosnan said it was not his problem.

Asked who he could see playing a rival Bond, Brosnan said, “God knows George Clooney? Woody Allen? Woody Harrelson? Woody Pecker? I don’t know.”
