Unidentified persons hurled crude bombs at the high-security jail where gangster Raja Acharya, prime accused in judo coach Biranchi Das murder, and some other criminals were lodged, the police have said.

One bomb exploded inside the prison compound in Jharpara here on Saturday night releasing thick smoke with a defeaning sound, while the other failed to explode, the police said on Sunday.

No one was injured and no damage was caused to jail property in the incident, inspector in-charge of Laxmi Sagar police station B K Das said, adding that a case had been registered in connection with the incident and efforts were on to arrest the persons involved in the act.

Senior police and prison officials inspected the jail soon after the incident to take stock of the situation as a number of criminals were lodged there, the police said, adding that Raja Acharya was also inside the special jail.

Describing the incident as an act of mischief by some people, they said the persons appeared to have thrown the bombs from outside the jail compound. The persons seemed to have fled the scene immediately after throwing the bombs, the police said and added that investigation was in progress and security further tightened in and around the prison.
